International. Solar thermal panels and wind turbines are already part of the emblematic structure of this monument that receives 7 million visits a year.
In 2015 the renovation works of the Eiffel Tower were completed to make it an accessible and efficient building. Of the actions carried out, the most striking has been those carried out on the first floor, converted into an immense balcony 57 meters high designed to enjoy all the beauty of Paris. This historic monument, which in 1889 was an icon of modernity, today has the most cutting-edge renewable technologies to reduce its carbon footprint and be more sustainable.
Although there is no reference of high environmental quality for the Eiffel Tower, one of the first objectives of the renovation of its first floor responds to a determined will to reduce its ecological footprint, within the framework of the Climate Plan of the Villa de Paris, signed by the Société d'Exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SETE), public company of exploitation of the monument.
In the first place, the position of the glazing has been revised, which, without altering the visual comfort of the panorama, allows to reduce by more than 25% the thermal contributions in summer and thus reduce its energy bill corresponding to the air conditioning.
Modern renewable technologies have also found their place in this building of the late nineteenth century. The first floor has been equipped with solar panels, installed on 10 m2 of its roof, which allow to cover approximately 50% of the hot water needs of the Ferrié and Eiffel pavilions, which house a conference room, rest area, shopping area and restaurants.
To make the reform possible, both pavilions have been completely rebuilt. They now have a rainwater recovery system that feeds the toilets. This device saves the energy needed to feed the pressure pumps that send water to the upper floors of the tower.
As for the air conditioning installations, to ensure a stable temperature for the users of the conference rooms, rest area, shops and restaurants, high energy efficiency heat pumps have been installed.
