The company specialized in standardization, Aenor, recently presented the ISO 21542 standard, on the criteria of accessibility to buildings.
For the development and definition of this new certification, the entity invested ten years of work. According to Javier García, Aenor's director of standardization, this is "the result of a great effort. A pioneering and avant-garde result that aims to provide solutions to the needs of society through the development of normative documents".
During the launch of the certification, held in Madrid, the director of the Seminar on Intervention and Social Policies (Siposo), Demetrio Alonso, highlighted the Law on Social Integration of the Disabled of 1982 for its importance in this type of accessibility issues.
For her part, Nieves Peinado, president of ISO/TC 59SC16 and AEN/CTN 41/SC9, explained that the main objective of the new regulations is "to serve as a guide to facilitate better development of environments following universal accessibility standards".
For the birth of a norm of these characteristics it is necessary that at least 75% of the world organizations give it their approval, ratify it; aspect that experts point out as demanding and complex. In this particular case, ISO 21542 was ratified by more than 95% of organizations in the global context.
The standard has 42 chapters and five annexes. It highlights the facilitating elements of mobility such as tactile pavements and visual contrast elements that are of great help to the population that has a disability.
