International. The Commission of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the Solar Head of State Association (SHOS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to install solar PV systems in key government buildings in OECS member states.
The MoU, which was signed on July 6 in Jamaica, will allow the OECS and SHOS to collaborate in the development and implementation of a regional strategy that seeks to generate economic savings through the installation of renewable energy systems for self-consumption in publicly owned infrastructures.
In this way, the OECS wants to strengthen its commitment to a sustainable future and to the global effort to address climate change and the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
For its part, SHOS, a non-profit organization that works with governments to demonstrate leadership in implementing the sustainable energy agenda, remains firmly hopeful that such agreements will inspire a global coalition of green leaders.
The SHOS team has already started working at the OECS installing the first solar system in the public residence of the Governor General, in the Government House of Saint Lucia. The 5.4 kW grid connection system will save 100 tons of carbon over its life cycle and save the government approximately US$150,000 a year.
