International. The Metal Construction Association (MCA) recently published the results of research concluding that certain metal roofs can last at least 60 years, meaning they don't need to be replaced during the life of a commercial building.
"This study is a breakthrough for the industry as it ultimately provides scientific information proven by a third party that supports the long-standing position we have held that steel-coated roofing systems are durable, economical, and can be better for the environment," said Scott Kriner, technical director of the Metal Construction Association.
In addition, he noted that most non-metallic roofs require one or more complete replacements during the typical lifespan of a building that is 60 years, which is expensive and often adds up as another source of solid waste.
To reach these conclusions, the study included results from multiple field inspections, independent laboratory analysis on corrosion of metal roofs and also includes an evaluation of all integral auxiliary components that impact the end of the roof's useful life.
