International . Twenty-two hotels of the RIU chain located in Spain, Portugal and Mexico received from the tour operator TUI Germany the "Environmental Champion 2015" award (TUI Umwelt Champion), recognition that is granted annually to those establishments outstanding for their commitment to the environment and sustainability.
Since its first edition in 1996, the main mission of the TUI Umwelt Champion has been to recognize those hotels that best meet the technical and organizational requirements in relation to sustainable and responsible hotel management, for example with energy and water saving measures.
The awarded hotels are subject to a method of points assessment by official auditors, which reflects their environmental and social management, as well as collecting the opinion of their guests through surveys.
In total there were 22 awarded hotels belonging to the RIU chain, eight more awards than in 2014 and four of them located in Mexico. According to the hotel company, these awards represent an advance in RIU's strategic plan for Corporate Social Responsibility, which establishes as one of its priorities the certification of all its hotels with international seals in sustainability.
The riu Yucatan, Riu Palace Mexico, ClubHotel Riu Tequila and Riu Palace Riviera Maya properties, all located in the sought-after tourist destination of the Riviera Maya, were the brand's hotels in Latin America that achieved this recognition.
