Colombia. The Packaged Educational Infrastructure Financing Fund carried out the first phase of contracting for the construction of the classrooms that are needed throughout the country, according to the Minister of Education, Gina Parody.
With contracts for 350,000 million pesos (US$103.5 million), five construction firms will be in charge of building 2,217 classrooms in 39 municipalities of the country, which is equivalent to 92 schools.
According to the Minister, the works will begin and end this year. Builder who is delayed in the work will not be able to continue.
The announcement means a remarkable advance in education, since in the country there is a lack of 50,000 classrooms and 380 are being built per year, so at that rate it would take 100 years to fill the deficit. According to Parody, 30,000 classrooms will be built over the next four years.
The figures provided indicate that there are 1,200 properties enabled for the construction of these educational entities in which the Government will put 70% and the municipalities and departments the remaining 30%.
It is expected that this first phase will benefit more than 100,000 children and in 2018 some two million children will be able to study in a single day.
