Chile. The Solar Committee of Chile and the Regional Government of the Biobío region have promoted an investment program in non-conventional renewable energies for energy self-sufficiency in buildings of micro-, small and medium enterprises in the Biobío Region.
The projects belong to initiatives of 23 communes in the region (11 projects are located in the Ñuble Region). 32% of the projects awarded corresponded to the agricultural sector, 30% to the tourism sector, and the rest to different productive activities. Companies opted 80% to use photovoltaic technology as part of their energy saving system. Some of the companies have registered an energy saving of 100% of their consumption, about 71 million pesos per year on average (118 thousand dollars), in addition to an estimated decrease of more than 368 thousand tons of CO2.
The initiative was born thanks to a collaboration and transfer of resources agreement between the Regional Government of Biobío and the Solar Committee, and involves a total investment of 870 million pesos (1.4 million dollars).
"For us it is important that companies can take advantage of the enormous opportunity we have as a country in the use of renewable energies, especially solar energy and thereby reduce their expenses for energy use and also contribute to the fight against climate change by reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, "- said Rodrigo Mancilla, Executive Director of the Corfo Solar Committee.
