Mexico. If it is determined that the construction of the New International Airport of Mexico (NAIM) continues, care must also be taken to obtain the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, which is given to sustainable constructions, since canceling the work would have negative repercussions for the Mexican economy.
A few weeks ago, javier Jiménez Espriú, who was proposed to occupy the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT), said that if it is decided to continue with the current construction, it would seek to reduce the costs of the most expensive works, even if it meant not receiving this certification.
In this sense, Ignacio García de Presno, Leading Partner of Infrastructure Advisory of KPMG in Mexico, explained that this certification is imperative, because it could even change the credit rating of the country, if in the most important work of the six-year term the commitments that Mexico has in environmental matters are not respected.
"The source of payment for contracted financing, such as the Airport Use Fee (TUA), is in dollars; and although it is very solid in that sense, changing this type of decisions (cutting expenses) even canceling the work or the scope of it, could affect the country, hence more specific studies must be carried out to see if there is viability, "he said.
He pointed out that the problem really lies in the fact that although there has been a lot of talk about the possibility of changing the construction of the air terminal, the members of the next administration have not clearly informed how it would be done, or the plan to follow, which ends up affecting the decisions even more.
We are currently working on LEED certification, platinum V4 for the terminal building and gold for the control tower and the air control center.
