Tourism industry activities in the Caribbean are unduly subject to additional taxes that do not apply to other sectors, such as the room tax, the exit tax, and the import tax. This according to the findings of the study entitled "Taxes and Costs of the Caribbean Hotel Sector", carried out by the Caribbean Regional Tourism Sustainable Development Programme (CRSTDP), as part of the technical assistance provided to the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) with funding from the European Development Fund (EDF). The study analysed the competitiveness of Caribbean hotels, on their operational costs, levels of taxation, and other cost-free barriers that adversely affect the tourism sector. The research focused on three sample destinations: Dominican Republic, Barbados, Jamaica and St. Lucia.
For comparison purposes with similar destinations, the report examined the incentive and investment regimes of the state of Hawaii and the Canary Islands; both destinations enjoy incentives that give way to a climate that facilitates investment in hotels, and also demonstrate a long-term commitment through several concessions that ensure that entries into the hotel sector do not have excessive tax burdens.
Sabre Travel Network announced the launch of Hotel UpSell, a new functionality of the system that gives the travel agent the opportunity to take advantage of relevant offers for their passengers at the same time they make the sale of a hotel stay. Hotel Upsell was launched in February 2006 in the United States and since that date the number of hotel properties that offer this type of opportunity through the Sabre system has tripled, reaching a total of 5,000 properties in May 2007. By the end of 2007, the number of participating properties is expected to exceed 6,500.
With an investment of more than USD 1 million dollars, the remodeling of the gym and the 159 rooms of the Radisson Plaza Santiago Hotel was completed. The process of remodeling rooms, which began in mid-2006 and involved the 20 floors of the property, meant the replacement of carpets, curtains, bedding and furniture, with fabrics and modern designs that refresh the environments, but without losing the classic touch of the hotel and respecting its traditional style.
The gym or health club was also remodeled. The Hotel decided to renovate its fitness area with Technogym. "This strategic alliance will allow us to offer our guests a luxury gym, with the highest technology and unique in the hotel industry of our country, "says Colin Turner, general manager of Radisson in Chile. Also the food & beverage area has had changes. The Brick Restaurant launched its new menu, the work of the renowned French chef Franck Diudonné where the variety of dishes and the rescue of some preparations of the old French cuisine stand out.
