The Hyatt Regency at the Colorado Convention Center has undertaken a sustainability program to minimize the hotel's total carbon footprint and reduce its environmental impact. Long-term sustainability programs include water and energy savings, waste reduction and recycling, as well as more staff education on environmental issues. To this end, low-flow plumbing fixtures have been designed, including tanks, faucets and showers, as well as sinks and urinals in public restrooms. Likewise, landscape designs appropriate to the climate have been created with efficient irrigation systems; and bed lines will only be changed at the request of the guest or before a new occupancy. The hotel's water consumption was 45 million gallons in 2007, and would have increased by 10% if these measures had not been implemented. Energy consumption has been reduced with the installation of a hydronic plate cooling system that uses outside air to cool the hotel when there are temperature variations, the change of 95% from bulbs to saving technologies, heat recovery from washing waste water to heat the cold water that enters, and use of locally grown agricultural products. The replacement of the bulbs has resulted in savings of 1,171,207.62 Kwh per year, or a saving of 6.5% in annual consumption.
