Around a saving of 1 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year are saving 71 hotel companies in Central America, thanks to the implementation of a program of good management practices and low-cost investments.
Hotels in Costa Rica, El Salvador and Nicaragua are part of the Regional Energy Efficiency Program in Small Hotels (PEEST), financed by the Hivos Foundation (Netherlands) and developed by the Energy Network Foundation (BUN-CA) of Costa Rica.
Since 2005 and until this year , this program provided technical assistance to low- and mid-range hotels to carry out energy diagnostics and invest in improving their efficiency through renewable energy systems, training, savings monitoring, and access to certifications regarding tourism sustainability for hotels.
Concrete actions such as the development of energy certification schemes for hotel SMEs, quality standards for the sector, innovative schemes for the replacement of inefficient electrical equipment, exchanges of experiences, among others, allowed to complete the goal.
