Recently, the president of the Board of Directors of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of Puerto Rico (AHT), Ismael Vega, spoke out against the proposal made by the president of the Finance Committee of the House of Representatives, Rafael Hernández, to legalize slot machines as part of the set of measures that will address the crisis of the Retirement Systems.
In his statement Vega hinted that this proposal may have interests within the sector of slot machine owners.
The official assured that the AHT will continue firm in its opposition to this proposal: "In the coming days we will be taking different actions to establish a frank dialogue with the media, the legislature, the government and the country, on the reasons why this measure is a bad move for Puerto Rico."
He also said that it must be understood that this situation puts at risk the country's tourism industry and the 70,000 jobs that depend on that market. "It attacks 80 percent of the Tourism Company's budget, reduces the contributions made by casinos and hotels to the treasury by millions, affects the budget of the University of Puerto Rico, and threatens the already hurt government credit."
