The government of Guanajuato, Mexico, took up an idea that for a few weeks has been circulating in an unconfirmed way, it is about selling the Vicentenario Park, the causes, according to official spokesmen, are the high costs of administration of the place.
It should be remembered that the Park was built in Silao in commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico. It is a space of 80 hectares whose investment by the Federal and State governments
The Guanajuato Bicentennial Park was built in Silao on the occasion of the celebrations of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico. It consists of 80 hectares and had an investment of close to US$130 million.
Despite the controversies generated by the project due to its high cost, the initiative went ahead but the forecasts failed. Originally it was planned to receive about 30,000 daily visitors, when the park was inaugurated the authorities recalculated and accepted a new expectation of 3,000 people. However, the real figures are very distant, between July and November 2010 100 people entered the place with a paid ticket.
This generates an imbalance in the accounts, since the sum for the monthly maintenance of the park is much higher than the income figure.
According to the governor of Guajajuato, Miguel Márquez, there are two options: sell the park in its entirety or create a public-private partnership with a sustainable project that continues to belong to the locals.
To date, and while the sale of the park is being finalized, the government is thinking of a third alternative that allows to make that a sustainable space, they could be installed there It is about installing two dependencies there: the secretariats of Tourism Development and Health.
