United States. New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced an extensive renovation plan for LaGuardia Airport, one of three terminals serving the city. The modernization of this air terminal will have an estimated cost of US $ 4,000 million, will begin to be executed in the first half of 2016 and it is expected that at least the first phase of the works will be ready by 2019.
The project will include the expansion of the 4 terminals that make up the airport, as well as the modernization of access to it, with the integration into the train and ferry system, as well as the installation of security devices and measures.
Currently the airport opened in 1930 after an investment of US $ 40 million, has an area of more than 2.7 million square kilometers and capacity for 72 aircraft gates. In addition, during 2014 LaGuardia served almost 27 million passengers, a figure that is expected to increase with the remodeling to reach 34 million passengers by 2030.
"New York has been known for undertaking ambitious infrastructure projects, and the case of LaGuardia confirms that determination. We are transforming LaGuardia into a globally renowned airport for the twenty-first century that is worthy of the city and state of New York," Cuomo said.
