Colombia. For any head of security or infrastructure manager it can be a headache to install CCTV systems in small spaces that limit the passage of wiring, such as elevators, especially since this can cause interference in the image, usually caused by the movement of cables.
Jaime Trujillo, Business Development Manager of the security company NVT for Central America and the Andean Region, shared with Building Management some lessons learned in a recent project on the challenges of installing security cameras in this type of situation.
According to Trujillo, in the new headquarters building of a renowned Latin American multinational of cosmetic products in Bogotá, Colombia, it was possible to overcome this obstacle, using the technology of Network Video Technologies (NVT), which takes advantage of paired or coaxial cabling, using EoC (Ethernet over Coaxial) and PoE (Power over Ethernet).
"Although the installation of video surveillance inside the elevators was planned from the beginning, the representative staff of the elevator manufacturer expressed their disagreement about launching additional wiring inside the pits for the transmission of the cameras, as well as implementing a network point inside the cabins, so the only option available was to make use of a couple of cables that were available or leave the area without monitoring," explains the NVT representative.
But the above was not advisable, because the elevators, explains Trujillo, are a critical space because they are confined places, without view to the outside, where actions that affect the security inside the buildings can occur, so ideally they should be monitored. Another reason why the installation of video surveillance in elevators is recommended is the ability to control situations such as power outages or technical failures, in addition to monitoring in cases of evacuation of the building.
The solution that was determined in common agreement with the project integrator was to install three NVT NV-EC1701 transceivers, one for each camera. The advantage offered by these devices is that they are able to use the cable pairs that were already available in the elevator to connect the cameras, without the need to install an additional cable.
