International . RIU Hotels & Resorts has launched a new project that will lead it to become the first Spanish hotel company in the Maldives. RIU has purchased the islets of Kedhigandu and Maafushi which will house two hotels in the Riu Palace category, with 174 rooms, and Riu Classic, with 248.
The project is currently in the design phase and the opening is scheduled for 2018. Located in the Indian Ocean, south of India and 780 kilometers from Colombo, capital of Sri Lanka, the Maldives are made up of about 1,200 islands of which only 203 are inhabited. The country is organized into 26 atolls (island groups) and Dhaalu is where the two RIU islets are located, while the nearest main island (populated and served) is Kudahuvadho.
The challenge that RIU faces today to be able to bring its brand to the Maldives is enormous since communications are very complex between the islands, and infrastructures and services do not exist. The construction will not resemble any previous project of the chain, while the necessary investment will also be very high, since between the land and the construction, RIU calculates that it will approach 140 million euros.
