Today many hotel establishments have made changes in the heating, air conditioning, lighting, laundry and kitchen systems, they have also implemented practices such as recycling, reducing their water and energy consumption, achieving savings between 40 and 50 percent.
On the other hand, some tourists have become aware of the situation of the planet and approximately 48% of travelers request to stay in a hotel friendly to the ecosystem according to UNWTO data.
These guests are involved through the possibility given by the establishments to choose whether or not their sheets and towels are washed daily, separate the garbage in the room, reuse the soap and shampoo containers, as well as turn off the lights and electronic equipment when leaving the room.
However, this environmental awareness is run over when some customers enter the hotel who do not contribute to the green policy because it seems to them that they waste a lot of time while turning on the lights again, connecting and disconnecting their laptops or forget to select the option that the washing of whites is not carried out daily.
In this regard, I have many questions such as: How ecological can a hotel be if its guests do not contribute to this work? How can hotels make their customers aware of the importance of saving water and energy, in addition to recycling?
There may be many strategies that could be put into practice so that the ecological responsibility of the industry continues on the right track, perhaps hotel managers should carry out training on the subject to travel agencies or tour operators, who in turn transmit the information to potential customers, or also hotels should establish guidelines that can not be violated during the accommodation, in order to ensure that each guest contributes to that environmental responsibility.
