Colombia. The plenary of the Senate approved, in the second debate, a bill called "Ana Cecilia Niño law", which seeks to prohibit the use of asbestos throughout the national territory.
The initiative contemplates a transition period of five years, during which companies must replace the use of this element, used mainly in construction, with cleaner technologies.
In addition, it orders the Ministry of Labor to design labor adaptation measures for people who live from this industry.
"In the last five years, 1,744 people died of lung cancer, as a result of their exposure to asbestos and more than 250 died from mesothelioma thanks to that silent enemy that is still being marketed in our country," said Senator Nadia Blel, author of the project.
The proposal contemplates fines ranging from 100 to 5,000,000 minimum wages, as well as criminal and administrative sanctions for those who use asbestos.
The aim of the initiative is to save lives and prevent more people from being exposed to this element.
