A good one in the hotel industry

At the end of last March, more precisely on the 28th, a new day of Earth Day was celebrated. Beyond the valuable meaning of the day, which meant, among other things, the support of citizens from all over the planet to initiatives to control greenhouse gas emissions, the fact that I want to highlight is the link of the hotel industry with this noble cause, something that should fill us with pride and serve as inspiration for other ideas that benefit the planet.

And what did the hotel sector do? The data I had access to were fundamentally of what the establishments did in Spain, a country in which both large and small chains joined the idea of providing an hour of respite to the planet by turning off the lights from 8:30 pm in each area. Consequently, chains such as NH Hoteles and institutions such as Hesperia Sevilla and Fuerte Hoteles, at the local level, and Starwood, Hard Rock and Hilton, at the international level, were linked to the program, putting a grain for the hospitality segment.

In order not to stay there, it is important to note that the link of the industry to the environmental and ecological cause should not be limited to this day and to turn off the lights for only one hour. This must go further and even link guests, who although they are not the only ones responsible for the consumption and excessive expenditure of electricity in hotels, they can begin to tip the balance in another direction. If we add to this a more determined will of hoteliers to implement energy expenditure control systems, water reuse cycles, in addition to other options, then it could be thought that the results would be more than positive.

I know there will be no shortage of those who wonder, how do we get guests to commit to the hotel's green program? Creativity is the best way and something interesting would be to link customer loyalty programs to these social initiatives. It is a good topic to think about, especially when the consumer is so sensitive to the images of the companies with which he does business.

Until next time.
