In recent years, InterContinental Chicago has sought to elevate its environmental performance, acquiring technology for energy saving and waste reduction, promoting effective environmental management among its vendors and contractors, and sourcing green and local commodities to reduce its carbon footprint. Several programs support this approach: recycling — of batteries, used PCs, and light bulbs; energy and resource management – including a program for the reuse of sheets and towels and technological devices to save water and energy; waste minimization (dispensers of personal hygiene products, donation of partially used bottles, cloth napkins, paints and products with low VOC); education and community outreach—with the inclusion of "green meetings" and "green weddings" in its portfolio of events—all complemented by the active participation of its employees in these programs.
These efforts translate into several awards and certifications, three in the last two years.
