Despite the violence on the border with the United States, Mexico continues to be one of Latin America's favorite destinations. This is stated by the Ministry of Tourism of this country, (Sectur), when revealing that during the month of July hotel occupancy grew 4.5% in coastal destinations and 4.4% in inland cities, compared to the same period in 2010.
According to this portfolio, among the beach destinations with the highest visitors during this period were the Riviera Maya with an occupancy of 85%, followed by Mazatlan with 82%, Cancun with 74%, Nuevo Vallarta with 73%, Puerto Vallarta with 72%, Ixtapa with 69%, Huatulco with 68% and Manzanillo with 66%.
Meanwhile, the most outstanding cities were Pachuca with 52.6%, Hermosillo with 41.4% and Xalapa with 33.5%; in addition, Campeche and Tlaxcala who registered an occupation of 23.2% and 21.4%, respectively.
According to the Undersecretary of Tourism Planning of Sectur, Ricardo Anaya, "these results are due to the tourism diversification strategy of the Mexican authorities and the dynamism of domestic tourism, which remains one of the main drivers of this activity."
