Tropical Storm Rina, which during the previous week forced the suspension of activities at the Cancun International Airport did not leave significant losses for the hotel sector of the city, as confirmed by the president of the Asociación de Hoteles de Cancún, Rodrigo de la Peña Segura, in dialogue with HOTEL AND RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT.
The official explained that between 70 and 100 flights were suspended on Thursday, but that by Friday activities had already resumed. "If there were some cancellations because the flights were suspended on Thursday, but just as some flights did not arrive there were others that did not leave and those tourists had to stay with us, then that compensated for the hotel operation," De la Peña said.
Although meteorologists did not rule out that it would become a hurricane due to winds of between 71 and 180 kilometers per hour, by Friday the risk had already been minimized. "I'm already seeing out my window the people on the beaches and in the pools happy," said the president of the Cancun Hotel Association in reference to the hotel activity on Friday. He added that calculations indicate that by the weekend the occupation would rise between three and four points.
Rodrigo de la Peña emphasized that the city is prepared to face storm and hurricane conditions and that, although they are not exempt from these natural phenomena, a whole system has been structured that allows the city to serve its tourists in case of a hurricane.
