Although in the first five months of the year the number of foreign passengers in Colombia rose by 4.34% compared to 2011, the hotel occupancy rate in the capital of this country fell by 5.61%, reported Cotelco Cundinamarca.
With the arrival of major hotel brands in Bogotá, new establishments were opened in the city, which represents some 435 new rooms to the lodging offer, which is a possible cause for this decline.
It is that the number of rooms available in Bogotá has increased in recent years, while at the end of 2010 the city offered 1,067 rooms, last year it closed at 1,248 and it is expected that this year it will reach 1,443.
The negative lodging figures were also reflected in the 1.92% drop in the average rate, comparing this year's figures with those of 2011.
Foreign tourists arriving in Colombia are of mostly U.S. origin with 21%, followed by Venezuelans and Argentines with 12 and 7% respectively. Ecuadorians and Peruvians have a 6% share. According to Cotelco specialists, the analysis of supply and demand should be based on factors such as air connectivity and road infrastructure.
