In Colombia, 35% of the rooms that are in the hotel offer are informal, they do not have a National Hotel Registry. This was reported by the Hotel and Tourism Association of Colombia (Cotelco).
With a view to mediating to overcome this situation, the president of this Association, Juan Leonardo Correa, called for reducing the high levels of informality that are registered in that country in the hotel market, which in his opinion makes competition increasingly difficult.
"The sector is facing three obvious facts: one, that the supply of rooms is increasing, due to the incentives that the Government created for the construction of new hotel infrastructure; two, that Colombia is an increasingly attractive country for tourists and therefore the demand for services has increased and three, that informality is causing serious problems for companies that meet the requirements established by law for this type of business, "the executive explained to Portafolio magazine.
During the General Assembly of Cotelco that was held in recent days in the city of Ibagué, issues concerning the legality and formality of this type of companies and the imbalance that is being presented in the Colombian market between the supply of rooms and the demand for them were examined, because during the last year, as reported by the Association, there was a decrease of close to 3% in the average occupation of the country.
