Mexico. The Ministry of the Environment (Sedema) and the Ministry of Finance of Mexico City announced that the owners of properties intended for housing use that have, or install from the date, green roofs in their buildings voluntarily will receive a 10% reduction in the payment of property tax as an incentive.
This regulation is in addition to the work that since 2007 the Secretariat has been promoting in order to improve the level of sustainability of the city. In fact, Sedema through the Directorate of Urban Reforestation, Parks and Bicycle Paths has carried out in recent years the installation of green roofs in public spaces of the city, including 6752 square meters in buildings belonging to the Government of the Federal District.
The government entity stressed that the installation of a system of this type must comply with requirements and technical specifications, conditions, parameters and minimum criteria of quality and safety, applicable to materials and construction procedures.
In addition, he pointed out that "this discount aims to increase the current surface of urban green areas in the Federal District, through the development of sustainable technologies or ecotechnics. With this, the Ministry of the Environment intends to contribute and compensate for the loss of green areas that the process of construction of buildings in the city represents".
