The company Meliá Hotels International announced its support and adoption of the system that was recently established by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) that seeks to calculate the carbon footprint produced by the operation of hotel establishments, the HCMI 1.0.
Meliá will implement the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI 1.0) methodology , which measures and reports carbon emissions, the goal is to reduce the impact of activities that negatively affect the ozone layer and the environment and establish eco-friendly processes within its Global Sustainability Policy.
To date, this initiative has been adopted by 23 of the most recognized hotel chains in the world.
This initiative was conceived at the beginning of 2011 with members of the ITP and the WTTC due to the constant requests of the actors and professionals of the sector to create a standardized system that reports unified results for the hotel sector.
The system has been tested in different hotels located in different geographical points since then it has been tested in hotels of different profiles, in different geographical areas and supervised by different stakeholders, with the participation of KPMG consultants. It has also been supervised by the World Resources Institute (WRI).
According to Gabriel Escarrer, Vice President and CEO of Meliá Hotels Internacional, "this allows us to continue building relationships of transparency and trust with our customers and to continue advancing with the consolidation of sustainable and responsible growth that ensures a balance between economic, environmental and social objectives".
