Overnight stays of travelers increase in Andalusia and the Balearic Islands

30 August, 2011 by anamariadoncel

Last July has turned out to be one of the most prolific for the hotel sector. The increase in cheap travel offers has generated an increase in the number of travelers and overnight stays in Spanish hotels. According to the latest study on the Hotel Tourism Situation (EOH) carried out by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), hotels have increased their occupancy by almost 10 percent more in the same stage of 2010.

The main destinations that Spaniards choose to spend their vacation days are Andalusia by 23 percent, Valencian Community by 16 percent, Catalonia by 14 percent and the Canary Islands by 9 percent. Most of these inland tourists have preferred three- and four-star hotels. These figures show how despite the crisis, Spaniards usually resort to offers in luxury hotels throughout the peninsular territory. Most of these vacation packages are usually the result of competition among the hundreds of private travel clubs that exist.

On the other hand, foreign travelers who decide to spend a few days in our country, mainly choose destinations in the Balearic Islands by almost 40 percent, Catalonia by 23 percent, the Canary Islands with 17.5 percent and Andalusia with more than nine percent. Madrid has also been a great recipient of foreign tourists. During the month of July, a significant percentage of overnight stays were recorded in hundreds of beautiful hotels in the Spanish capital.

The tourist areas with the highest degree of occupation and overnight stays have been mainly coastal areas including the islands. Mallorca has the highest number of occupancy by places with more than 90 percent, and more than 7 million overnight stays.

As for the origin of foreign travelers in our country, the highest percentage corresponds to residents of the European Union with 73 percent. The majority of Europeans who have chosen Spain as a holiday destination come from the United Kingdom (18.90 percent), Germany (17.07 percent) and France (10.44 percent).

Although there have also been movements of foreign travelers not resident in the EU, most correspond to American tourists and mainly from the United States.
