Colombia. With debris and other recyclable materials, the first building in Colombia will be built that will integrate the concept of 'friendly to the environment' to the letter.
It is a ten-story building that will be one of the headquarters of the EAN University in Bogotá.
"Instead of using concrete extracted from the mountains, from the quarries, we will use debris that has been transformed to use it as concrete," said Miguel Ángel Orejuela, engineer and manager of Legacy.
He explained that most (almost all) of the material used for the construction of this building will be biodegradable.
"We will use guadua, cotton, materials made from agricultural waste, among others," he said.
He also assured that materials will be guaranteed so that "they are not conducive to the health of people, both for those who will build it and for those who will use it."
The environmentally sustainable construction industry has been developing in Colombia since 2008.
Some particular characteristics have been incorporated into the construction, but Orjuela reports that "it is the first time that in the country integrates all".
The 20,000-square-meter project costs about 71 billion pesos ($23.6 million).
Inside it will have two auditoriums, a sports center, a gym, modern laboratories, 366 parking stalls and 166 spaces for bicycles.
The EAN Legacy building will be ready in 2019 and will receive four thousand new students.
