Colombia. 3D modeling has revolutionized industries such as film, medicine, interior design, in addition to the architectural and construction industries.
The so-called Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the generation and management of data of a building during its life cycle, using dynamic three-dimensional and real-time modeling software, to reduce the loss of time and resources in design and construction. Some international experts talk about the importance of implementing BIM methodology in the area of construction in Colombia:
Luis Henao, Victaulic's Regional Manager for Central America, explains that BIM concerns both geometry, the relationship with space, geographic information and the properties of the components of a building and can be used to illustrate the entire process of building, maintenance and even demolition. It's like making legos, adds Henao, who highlights that the philosophy of his company is to do things much faster, much easier and more expeditiously, all this thanks to this methodology.
Other experts such as Ivana Kermen, Technical Specialist for Autodesk in Latin America, points out that the BIM concept is synonymous with efficiency and gives a guarantee of doing things in a better way.
The company Autodesk, specialist in 2D and 3D design, engineering and entertainment software is also the creator of Revit®, a system that is based on the BIM methodology and consists of a program with a parametric change engine with a database that manages and coordinates the information necessary for the modeling of the architectural design, construction and engineering of a building, including all specialties. This program allows you to create designs based on intelligent and three-dimensional objects, which are associated to automatically coordinate in the face of any changes introduced.
What is the importance of the Colombian market to promote the use of BIM?
"The construction industry plays an essential role in the economy of countries in Latin America. The current situation in Colombia, in particular, faces new challenges in investments in this industry. The main advantage of implementing BIM in Latin American countries is that it allows the collaborative work of the different agents involved in the construction process through a single platform in which they can work with the same tool, integrating and sharing information in real time" Explains Kermen.
Finally, specialists indicate that despite the enormous and proven benefits that BIM systems provide to the construction industry, the high ignorance of this methodology in Latin America translates into a low implementation rate. Ivana adds that Colombia is halfway there, the knowledge of the tools is available, but we must also involve people and processes.
