We invest more money abroad while in domestic trips we prefer to make the minimum expenditure
In our trips abroad, Spaniards invest an average of 129 euros in accommodation per day The average expenditure on domestic travel is reduced to 100 euros The Irish and the Portuguese are ahead of us on the list of European tourists who spend the most when traveling abroad On the contrary, France and Germany are the countries that invest the least outside their countryDespite the economic crisis in which we currently find ourselves, Spaniards are still the third on the list of Europeans who spend the most on accommodation when traveling outside our country. Even maintaining this position, the situation in which we find ourselves is reflected in the expenditure made, since this has been reduced compared to the previous year. Specifically this year we have invested an average of 129 euros a day while in 2007 the expenditure amounted to about 133 euros, according to the latest Hotel Price Index of Hotels.com (Hotel Price Index - Autumn 2008). Only the Irish and the Portuguese are ahead of us, also showing a decrease in consumption compared to the previous period. The study compiles hotel prices around the world, as well as the expenditure made on accommodation by each nationality and highlights representative data on the habits of Spaniards when traveling.
As for trips within the country, the data revealed contrasts with those made abroad, since we spend less money in Spain. Specifically, we consume 100 euros, thus placing us among the three countries that invest the least money. In this sense, the French, whose expenditure is reduced to only 85 euros, and the Germans, who invest an average of 93 euros on average per day in Spain, are ahead of us. On the other hand, in terms of spending by tourists of other nationalities in foreign hotels, we find that those from Ireland and Portugal are the ones that are at the top of the list. Specifically, the Irish spend an average of 140 euros in their country, while the Portuguese spend 131 euros on average, respectively.
This study by Hotels shows that Spaniards, unlike other nationalities, prefer to give ourselves greater luxuries outside our country. A habit that continues to be maintained even living a situation of generalized crisis, which is only reflected in the decrease in general consumption.

About HPI
The Hotel Price Index (HPI) of Hotels.com is a periodic report that collects the prices of the hotels of the main cities of the world. It is a benchmark report in the sector, as it collects data from a wide selection of accommodations. It is based on data from Hotels.com (hotel experts), the most visited hotel booking website in the world.
The HPI tracks the actual prices paid per room in a wide selection of hotels representing all star categories in major cities. Approximately 68,000 hotels in more than 12,500 locations make up the sample of hotels from which the prices that make up the HPI are obtained. The figures indicated in the index are the actual ones paid by customers (not promotional rates), accurately reflecting hotel prices. The international reach of Hotels.com (in terms of customers and destinations) makes this index one of the most complete references currently available in the tourism sector, thanks to the fact that it incorporates a wide range of hotels, both belonging to chains and independents.
In Europe, approximately 25% of hotel rooms belong to chains and the rest are independent. The opposite happens in the case of the United States, where approximately 70% of the rooms reserved belong to chains.
In addition to the figures, the HPI includes information about new or unusual trends in bookings and pricing.
