A vegetarian group is trying to warn consumers at U.S. restaurant chains about a carcinogenic chemical that forms in grilled meat, especially chicken. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine filed a lawsuit to this effect in a Los Angeles court. The same group recommends a vegetarian diet as part of a healthy lifestyle. The lawsuit is supported by a law passed by voters in 1986, which requires companies to notify consumers when a product contains a carcinogenic agent from a state-issued list. This list contains the chemical PhIP, which is formed by cooking meat, especially chicken, at high temperatures. The lawsuit would require the defendant restaurants to place "clear and sensible warnings" about the carcinogen, and would fine each violation $2,500 a day. The defendants are McDonald's Corp; Burger King; Carlson Restaurants Worldwide Inc, parent of TGI Fridays; Applebee's International of IHOP Corp; Chick-Fil-A; Brinker International, owners of Chili's Grill and Bar Restaurant, and OSI Restaurant Partners LLC, owners of Outback Steakhouse restaurants.
