According to information published by América Economía, a technical regulation issued by the ministries of Social Protection and Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia would be hindering the import of tableware in the Andean country.
The regulation, which after several tug-of-wars between the government on the one hand and importers, manufacturers and marketers on the other, began to apply in January of this year, prohibits the production or import of ceramic and glass tableware and utensils that do not meet minimum safety specifications in terms of the imics used in his painting, such as lead and cadmium.
Although the Technical Tableware Regulation was issued, as noted by the government at the time, out of the need to protect consumers from the high levels of lead and cadmium used in the painting of these products, many importers saw in the new standard a double intent. company producing tableware in the country, Locería Colombiana, which for several years has insisted on the promulgation of this technical regulation, with the final intention of closing imports of tableware to the country, "admits Guillermo Botero, president of the National Federation of Merchants, Fenalco.
