A total of 132 new establishments will be opened in 2011 in Latin America, according to a study prepared by the consulting firm Lodging Econometrics.
The report assures that despite the crisis and the reduction in the number of projects, the plans that will be carried out in the region will mean a total of 23,693 new rooms. Likewise, the consultancy explains that openings have increased significantly in Latin America in recent years.
151 establishments were opened in 2008 with 26,204 rooms and in the first months of 2009 73 new hotels were opened and by the end of the year they could reach 220.
The study explains that for now investors are influenced by the crisis, the decrease in tourists, as well as health problems, so 45 projects have been canceled, some of them already under construction.
The Caribbean, Mexico and Central America are the most affected with these suspensions, but forecasts point to a rebound in projects in Colombia, Brazil, Chile and Mexico, because according to economic expectations these markets will recover faster.
