The Quebrada del Picchu is a kind of gigantic terrace that houses a monumental llaqta. A llaqta is a form of Andean Inca construction, which was usually used as the administrative office of the empire. In the particular case of Machu Picchu, a llaqta located on the aforementioned terrace, doubts still remain as to its final destination. Some authors believe that it was the summer residence of the first Inca Emperor Pachacutec (in the mid-fifteenth century). However, for others, it was a sacred temple, dedicated to the worship of the Inca divinities, with its specific rituals, among which was also the human sacrifice. In the area, prior to the creation of this monumental temple, other populations developed, since 900 BC.
The construction of Machu Picchu is considered an advanced engineering work. So much so that in 1983 it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Subsequently, in 2007 it was awarded the rank of New Wonder of the World. The construction is accessible only by the millenary Inca roads, so getting to it is not an easy task. However, those who make their way and contemplate the site for the first time cannot but feel overwhelmed by a powerful mystical sensation.
It is estimated that around 1000 inhabitants lived in this place. From the Inca occupation, the local population grew greatly. Despite being difficult to reach Machu Picchu, according to the arrangement of the roads most used by the Incas, the site was in the center of a densely populated area, since it had its water supply assured and the lands were particularly suitable for crops.
