The management of the Morumbí stadium in Sao Paulo announced that it will build three new hotels in the vicinity of the sports stage that should be ready before the opening of the 2014 World Cup.
According to Juvenal Juvêncio, president of Sao Paulo Fútbol Club, the land for the construction of the establishments will be ceded free of charge by the club, but that it will not invest any capital in the construction; however, the club would have a direct share in the monthly profits of the hotels that are operating.
"The idea came up in a meeting when we realized that the Morumbí is in the middle of two large hospitals; many people who come to Sao Paulo to get check-ups need a hotel for a few days and the nearest hostels are several streets away," said José Francisco Mansur, advisor to Juvenal Juvêncio.
According to preliminary information, the works would cost 100 million reais (about US$58.5 million) although the capacity of the hotels has not yet been estimated. It is expected that the designs and economic calculations will be ready by the end of 2011, so that the work can begin on time.
The Sao Paulo football club also reported that it is in talks with the Accor group that has already shown interest in operating with the Mercure, Ibis and Formula-1 brands in the stadium.
