The hotel chain NH Hoteles recently obtained the ISO 50.001 Certification on Energy Management Systems, which was granted after an audit carried out by the company TÜV Rheinland.
Through its Environmental Plan, the hotel chain managed to obtain this recognition due to its sustainable improvements. In the middle of this year it obtained an energy saving of 15.63%, water of 28.33% and managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 32.41%, in the same way the generation of waste decreased by 26.83%.
These percentages have been achieved thanks to the installation of 4,477 m2 of solar panels. In addition, 52% of its hotels around the world already consume some type of renewable energy, and can generate about 4 million kwh / year of solar energy, which avoids consuming 342 tons of oil.
Its self-sufficient elevators allow energy savings of 1,200 kWh / year compared to the traditional one, and reduces CO2 emissions by 1,200 Kg per hotel per year. In water, NH Hoteles claimed to have saved more than 675,000,000 liters of water, which would be equivalent to the capacity of 270 Olympic swimming pools, since its Environmental Plan works.
"Thanks to the effort that has been made in our hotels during this time, it has allowed us to generate a culture of efficiency and respect for the environment. Undoubtedly, being the first hotel company in the world to achieve the ISO 50,001 energy efficiency certification encourages us to continue working as before in favor of the environment," said Luis Ortega, director of environment and engineering at NH Hoteles.
