In the last four years, the NH hoteles chain has managed to reduce its energy consumption, water, CO2 emissions and the amount of waste generated by its operation by 20% thanks to the 4 million euros invested for this purpose.
The company reported that these results are part of the objectives set out in its Environmental Strategic Plan 2008-2012 and specified that in this period an energy saving of 22.7% has been achieved in the company's properties.
To this is added a reduction in water consumption of 27.6%, the reduction of CO2 emissions close to 40% and a reduction in waste of 34.2%.
Among the measures implemented to achieve these figures is the change of almost one million conventional bulbs for low-consumption LED lights. Also, some of the hotels began to use ecological elevators with better electricity consumption and lower CO2 emissions.
The use of double discharge baths, as well as devices to reduce water consumption in showers and washes has made it possible to reduce water consumption. In general terms, 69% of the hotels in the chain use some type of renewable energy, so, added to other measures, it has been possible for NH to achieve ISO 50001 certification.
In this regard, Luis Ortega Cobo, director of environment and engineering of NH Hoteles, said that "the objectives set were very ambitious, but we have not only managed to exceed them but we have also been ahead of the deadline. Something that would not have been possible without the involvement of the employees of all our hotels who have been able to adapt to change and make this company a benchmark in eco-sustainability in the tourism sector".
