. Nearly 6 million jobs are created globally thanks to energy efficiency initiatives, according to the 2015 Economic Prosperity and Energy Productivity Index published by The Lisbon Council, Ecofys and Quintel Intelligence.
According to this report, there is enormous potential to boost economic, social and environmental development through improved energy consumption and production. The study also classifies countries according to their energy productivity (economic performance per unit of energy consumed).
At the top of the list is Hong Kong with an energy productivity of 456 million euros of GDP per hexajuly consumed. Cuba is second, with 365 billion euros of GDP per hexajuly, followed by Colombia, Singapore and Switzerland.
The report also highlights that approximately 98% of energy is wasted and only a modest increase in energy efficiency, through the implementation of improvements in buildings, would boost the economy, create jobs and contribute to saving the environment.
