Mexico. The City Council has already replaced 36% of the streetlights in Guadalajara with others of LED technology. This means, for the moment, a reduction in CO2 emissions of 1,649 tons, which would be equivalent to the planting of 5,491 trees in the city.
This has been pointed out by the deputy mayor, Jaime Carnicero, who has reported this morning the degree of execution of the investments included in the new municipal energy management contract, in force since last September 12. So far, 1.9 million have been invested in this change, of the 5 million that the successful bidder, Ferrovial Services, will allocate for this purpose. A total of 14,791 light points in Guadalajara will be replaced.
The sodium vapor lamps are giving way to others of white light LED technology, which conform to the energy efficiency regulations that the City Council must comply with. This, as the deputy mayor points out, contributes to the Guadalajara City Council continuing to be a pioneer in sustainable urban development. Jaime Carnicero has stated that when all the light points are changed, there will be a reduction in CO2 emissions per year of 4,425 tons, which is equivalent to the annual planting of 14,736 trees.
It has already acted in numerous areas, such as Manantiales, downtown area, Eras del Canario, Chopera, SP pp11 and SP pp10 or Francisco Aritio. The next areas of action will be the parks of Aguas vivas, the center, the rest of Francisco Aritio and sectors SP02 and SP04). Since the replacement of public lighting began, the City Council has held meetings with the neighborhood associations of the areas in which it has acted, in order to inform about the changes that were going to occur.
Soon the corresponding works will also begin for the installation of the so-called Neos Zebra, systems that illuminate the area when they detect the presence within a radius of six meters. Some of the locations are: surroundings of Cuatro Caminos, Cifuentes Street 47, Boulevard of Entrepeñas 2, Fernández Iparraguirre at the height of Doctor Fleming and Eduardo Guitián (roundabouts of the Quantity Surveyors and Scouts).
