After a complete external audit, LAN CARGO became the first cargo airline with operations at Miami International Airport to receive the international certification ISO 14001 – 2004 for its Environmental Management System. This consists of a series of processes and practices that allow you to identify, control, manage and reduce environmental impacts in all your ground operations, including the new maintenance hangar recently opened.
"We want to be one of the best airline groups in the world and, for that, the care of the environment is fundamental. Having this certification is a worldwide recognition and today LAN CARGO operates under an Environmental Management System. Compliance with its rules and standards will allow us to manage our land operations much more efficiently, take better care of and manage resources, manage our environmental impacts and the carbon footprint of our operation," says Cristián Ureta, CEO of LAN CARGO.
This certification is the result of three years of work and validates the management and policy designed by LAN CARGO. Based on a series of tools and actions that strengthen measures to control and reduce environmental impacts, these standards also promote the continuous improvement of operational processes.
Miami International Airport is one of the most important hubs of the cargo business in which the base of its operations is located, being the LAN CARGO warehouse the second largest in the enclosure. This is also the most important airport in the United States and the ninth in the world for international cargo. From this location the company connects cargo to different parts of the world and is a strategic point for LAN CARGO's operations to and from South America.
Among the environmental certifications of the airline industry is the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnva), a voluntary system designed specifically by and for the airline industry in order to improve the environmental management of its air operations, and the ISO 14.001-2004 standard that aims to improve the management of ground operations and is applicable to all types of companies.
"The Environmental Management System being implemented by LATAM Airlines Group and its subsidiaries has been designed to cover all the group's operations, both air and ground. The companies have been working and investing for several years in these environmental initiatives and have received, in addition to the ISO 14001-2004 certification, accreditation in the second stage of the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) for international flights operated by LAN in Chile. This is the highest level that can be obtained in this system and we were the first airline in America and the third in the world to achieve this certification. It is a work of years that is beginning to have important fruits, "says Enrique Guzmán, Senior Manager of Environment LAN.
