Panama. Two companies presented their technical and economic proposals for the tender for the construction of the works of improvements to the sanitary sewerage system of Punta Paitilla and Punta Pacifica. These are Constructora Meco, S.A. and the BCC consortium.
The estimated amount of this project, part of the second module of the wastewater treatment plant within the sanitation project of the city and bay of Panama is $18 million, which will be financed in part by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF).
Tatiana de Janón, director of the Sanitation Project Unit of the City and Bay of Panama, reported that the work, whose order to proceed should be delivered next May, will mitigate the lack of capacity of the existing sewer system and the collapsed septic tanks. In addition, it includes pumping stations without operation, discharges of wastewater to the rainwater system and overflowing and stagnant wastewater on the tracks.
De Janón asked the citizens not to throw garbage into the rivers and streams, as this complicates the sanitation process.
The Ministry of Health published in June 2015, on the PanamaCompra portal, the specifications for the design and construction of the second module of the wastewater treatment plant in Panama City.
The contract, which amounts to US$342.5 million, will include the operation and maintenance for 10 years of the first and second modules.
The first stage of the bay's sanitation — where some $900 million has been invested — is due to be completed in 2017.
