An investigation carried out by the Instituto Brasilero de Geografía y Estadística (Ibge), concluded that Rio de Janeiro is the city with the highest number of five-star hotels and more hostels in the entire Brazilian territory.
That city will host major sporting events over the next four years, including the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games; therefore, its infrastructure and hotel capacity is increasing and strengthening both in quantity and quality.
Rio de Janeiro concentrates 609 hospitality establishments, totaling 38,565 rooms with capacity to accommodate about 83,130 visitors.
In addition, the existing hotels are being modernized and it is expected that by 2016 more than 4,500 more rooms will have been built. This city has the highest proportion of luxury hotels and superior category in the whole country, more than 18% of the establishments belong to this range.
An additional advantage revealed by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, based on the Ibge study, has to do with the installed capacity in neighboring municipalities in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.
A total of 964 hotels with a capacity to serve 62,853 guests is the sum of the hotel availability near Rio in municipalities such as Teresópolis, Petrópolis and the members of the Região dos Lagos.
The South American country is preparing to receive around 600,000 foreign tourists for the 2014 World Cup and some 380,000 international visitors at the 2016 Olympic Games. In total, close to one million people are expected to travel to Brazil to attend sporting events.
According to the Brazilian Institute of Tourism (Embratur), the accommodation conditions will be good, since not only is the installed capacity being improved, but also extensions and new constructions have already been announced by large chains and international companies.
