Almost 1.7% of the total number of green hotels that exist on the planet until today are located in Mexico, and the figure continues to grow in the search and promotion of ecological tourism, which minimizes the impact of the C02 emissions generated by this market.
Currently there are 50 hotels in Mexico that have a certification that names them as "green", in general figures the planet is already reaching 3,000 establishments that enjoy this seal. 2,958 are certified hotels.
This is a strategy that is being implemented not only to improve its image and develop social and environmental objectives, but also to generate significant economic and operational savings within the company.
Such is the case of the Novotel Monterrey Valle hotel; its general manager, Napoleón Flores, details that from 2008 until now it has had savings in its establishment of 5% in water consumption, 6% in electricity and 1.3% in gas expenditure, and that there are ambitious and clear goals for 2013.
Flores offered more didactic examples of what these figures mean to them: "The electricity savings are equivalent to more than 3,800 hours of television on and the gas savings to more than 2,800 hours of use of the hair dryer."
The organization implemented different alliances with different companies in that search: with Copamex they have an agreement to recycle paper, with General Electric to reuse gas, with Universal Waste in the recycling of cardboard, glass, iron, wood and organic waste; and with Sony Energéticos they work on recycling edible oil to produce soaps.
The Meliá Mexico Reforma Hotel, the Playa Viva boutique in the city of Guerrero, the Ocean Coral & Turquoise in the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo, the Fiesta Americana Centro hotel in Monterrey, among many others, advance a large number of strategies and measures of awareness and action to give continuity to its green seal, and many others to achieve it.
