The Mayor's Office of La Paz, Bolivia, together with the Society of Engineers of Bolivia (SIB) departmental La Paz, has begun a process of verification of the status of buildings whose construction is more than five years old.
This was announced by the mayor of the Bolivian capital, Luis Revilla, who also said that the inspection work will begin in January 2013. There are hundreds of properties with this particularity.
The initiative arises in the midst of the emergency due to the risk of collapse of the El Alcázar building.
"We have talked with the society of engineers and we are going to sign an agreement so that professionals can review the state of the buildings in the city, so that recommendations can be made to the co-owners so that they assume preventive measures and in the future we do not face this type of problem, "- the official said at a press conference.
The president of the SIB, Marcelo Badani, said that this is a preliminary plan that still requires planning. He noted, however, that his entity is willing to collaborate.
However, Badani pointed out that not only should buildings that are five years old or more should be monitored, but also annual maintenance should be carried out on all buildings that are more than five stories high.
"All buildings should be maintained at least once a year. In addition to the fact that it should be operated by request, that is, if the neighbors identify any fault in the property, call the Mayor's Office to see immediate solutions and not wait until the last, "he said.
