International. The advantages that vertical gardens and green roofs bring to buildings range from energy saving, thermal insulation and aesthetic effects to sound insulation. Precisely this last characteristic was the subject of the study "Evaluation of vertical gardens as a passive sound insulation system for buildings".
This study showed that buildings with vertical gardens have a greater absorption of noise. According to the data provided by the research, there is a reduction in the noise index of up to 15 decibels (db) compared to the use of conventional walls.
Vertical gardens are growing in popularity thanks to their ability to cool the buildings in which they are installed, with the consequent reduction in the use of air conditioning and the electricity consumption derived from it. So it is interesting to add precise data on another potential benefit that would help a better work environment for employees.
However, the researchers point out that these systems still represent an extra cost of installation and maintenance so they may not be appropriate for all types of buildings.
