Hospital in England triples trainings using cameras

Pennine NHS Trust's Centre for Simulations and Clinical Skills uses Axis network audio and video technology to boost healthcare professional training.

The Royal Oldham Hospital, part of the Pennine NHS Trust Intensive Care Hospital, recently opened a state-of-the-art Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre to triple the number of trainings. The initiative uses new audio and video technologies from Axis Communications, the market leader in network video, allowing doctors, nurses and midwives to be trained in advanced surgical procedures.

The main challenge faced by the hospital in developing the center was to collect all the data from a training session for reproduction, including audio, visual data and patients, to ensure a constructive experience for interns. To achieve this, the institution installed a networked video, audio and data system to ensure that the simulation provides richness in details. The technology was implemented with the help of Pure Audiovisual, the company responsible for the conception and installation of the project.

"Currently, the Trust already trains 700 employees per year within a similar space at North Manchester General Hospital. With the Royal Oldham Hospital, we expect 1,400 doctors per year to be trained, i.e. around 2,100 employees within the Trust will have the support to ensure that the patient receives high-level care," explains Katherine Robertson, Project Manager for Learning Development and Organisation at Pennine NHS Trust.

Axis' complete solution includes four AXIS P5515 IP cameras, responsible for the highest quality, high-detail images for simulations, as well as the benefit of zooming in on machines to closely monitor every procedure. The camera also features audio detection, which allows voice interaction during the session. The system also includes three AXIS M5014 cameras, with wide coverage so that students can also have an overview during the simulation. Audio integration is facilitated by three AXIS P8221 I/O audio modules, which allow a quick connection to the network video system.

"While the goal of the new facility is to ensure that the hospital's clinical staff gains the knowledge and skills needed to provide patients with premium care, the center also has additional training rooms to extend to other areas. One of the simulation rooms reflects a doctor's office, which will be used for training in functions that are not only technical and surgical, including sensitive issues such as the correct way to give news to families, training for forensic doctors and management evaluations, "says Atul Rajput, Regional Director of Axis in Northern Europe.

For Tony Crossley, Technical Director of Pre-sales of Pure Audiovisual, there are also many other applications or industries where this type of training solution can be applied in addition to the field of health. "Any scenario where audio input is vital, as well as the need to access other data streams, including video, can be adapted to this configuration. For example, monitoring workers' actions during safety or training of new products in a production environment."
