A year after an earthquake devastated 50% of Haiti's territory, voices of recovery are beginning to be felt. New investment and recovery plans for Haiti's hotel and tourism sector were unveiled at the Caribbean MarketPlace, which is currently being held in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Hotel Villa St. Louis and the Belle Rive are the first two projects that are finalizing the planning stage, and work is already underway to conceive a third complex. The Villa St. Louis hotel will be the first rebuilt on the island and will serve as a starting point to unite hospitality workers, who were left adrift after the earthquake destroyed some resorts and forced the cancellation of trips and conventions scheduled in advance in Haiti.
The construction of the hotel will require between 500 and 600 new employment opportunities, including 30 part-time employees to attend banquets and receptions. To these are added between 100 and 120 permanent positions, 20% of which will correspond to managerial and supervisory positions.
"The reconstruction of the hotel will not substantially increase employment during the construction stage, but it implies direct and indirect employment opportunities for Haitians in the medium and long term," explained Nikolas Easrwick-Field of NEF & JM Associates, responsible for the project.
