The proposal to build a hotel and convention centre in Haiti is currently in the minds of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
This possibility comes after two years of the earthquake that shook that country, in 2010. The goal is to use a 4.05-hectare, US$10.5 million property acquired by these organizations and owned by the cigar company Comme il Faut.
The plan is that the profits generated by this new complex will be destined to sustain the work of the local Red Cross in Haiti in the coming years.
According to Eduard Tschan, head of the Haitian delegation of the International Red Cross, "the payment of the property was made in a single issue with the use of funds donated by national agencies of that organization for recovery after the natural disaster."
Taking into account that for this organization the recovery of Haiti has been a priority and in it great resources and efforts have been invested: some 3,000 people have been working on it since then, now that the workflow decreases, the Red Cross prepares an exit strategy to solve the future of this property.
It is worth noting that the Haitian Red Cross currently operates there hand in hand with the health department of the national government and that it will remain in that place.
As Tschan confirmed to the Associated Press, two ideas are being studied so far, the first has to do with the sale of the land that is being wasted, since the Haitian Red Cross is not using it, and the second is to find a partner to build a hotel and a conference center that will make it possible to generate profits for the sustenance of that organization.
