International. The project will become Europe's largest photovoltaic power plant that will provide electricity to 100,000 homes in Ukraine and reduce carbon dioxide emissions to more than 300,000 tons annually.
Trina Solar, a leading technology provider of smart solutions for solar energy, announced that it has delivered a total of 123,000 kilowatts (KW) of solar panels to a photovoltaic power plant developed by DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company. Upon completion, the project will become the largest PV installation locally and the largest PV power plant in Europe.
Located near Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, in central Ukraine, the project has a planned capacity of 246MW (million watts) and will be capable of producing 280 million kWh (kilowatt hours) of solar energy per year, placing Trina Solar (the Chinese company) among the leading suppliers of this type in Europe. The power plant, for which the Machinery Engineering Corporation of China (CMEC) acts as a contractor, is expected to be completed in early 2019 and connected to the power grid in March. From that point on, the power plant will provide electricity to 100,000 homes in Ukraine and reduce carbon dioxide emissions to more than 300,000 tons annually.
Yin Rongfang, Executive Vice President of Trina Solar, said: "As technology continues to advance, solar PV as an energy source, will gradually reach grid parity. At the same time, demand in emerging markets is increasing. This year, on several occasions, we have had good news from emerging markets, including Ukraine and Vietnam; and we are very happy to have been recognized and trusted by local customers. As a leading global PV solutions company, which has maintained consistent long-term development, Trina Solar will continue to promote the application and adoption of clean energy worldwide."
Currently, Ukraine's energy supply is mainly based on fossil fuels and nuclear power, and renewable energy accounts for a very small proportion. To diversify its energy sources, the government of that country initiated a national energy development strategy with the aim of increasing the total installed capacity of renewable energy to 5 GW (gigawatts) by 2020.
As the world's leading provider of integrated solar solutions, Trina Solar has built a strong sales and operations team with products sold in more than 100 countries. In 2017, shipments of Trina Solar modules worldwide exceeded 9 gigawatts; of which, more than 60% were delivered to markets outside of China.
