Mexico. SafeStart is a highly successful workplace safety awareness program around the world. Larry Wilson, CEO of the company and Author of the program, pointed out that they are pioneers in addressing the Human Factors that determine the vast majority of accidents on and off the job, and SafeStart is the best-selling safety and performance program in the world since 2009; more than 3,000 companies, more than 30 languages, available in more than 60 countries and with more than 3 million people trained.
In his recent visit to Mexico, the specialist considered that security has presented three stages over the years: the first is focused on dangers and compliance with rules and procedures; the second with conscious and deliberate decisions, such as the use of personal protective equipment; and the third focuses on processes of the subconscious, developing personal skills and safety habits.
SafeStart determines that there are four mental and physical states: Haste, Frustration, Fatigue and Complacency, which lead people to make four critical mistakes: eyes not on the task, mind not on the task, entering or being in the line of fire or losing balance, traction or grip.
More than 95% of accidents at work, at home or on the road are caused by inadequate decision-making, influenced by one or more of these critical states and errors. Teaching people to recognize the states that cause accidents can be the difference between life and death.
The author of SafeStart, pointed out that he intends that workers in various industries be trained to develop the subconscious part of the brain, the part that we use 95% of the time and that is responsible for our automatic responses. That is, teach them techniques so that they recognize these states and associate them with critical errors in a habitual way.
"We have to change the perception of dangers, make people really focus on the task they are doing at all times, such as being aware that you are driving faster than usual to get to work on time, and not be thinking about the excuse you are going to have to tell your boss for being late. Our responsibility is to help them recognize the dangers, raise awareness and keep the focus in the right place."
